The originality of the band is based on the fusion between different Metal genres (Black, Death, Power and Thrash) and Classical music. This results in an entity that is fresh, exclusive and powerful, yet still recognizable by many, which allows the band to reach a broader audience. Even those who have never been attracted to Heavy Metal music before, appreciate Liva's originality. As a matter of fact, Liva stands out among other bands on account of its soprano vocals, viola and the fact that the lyrics are in Latin. Indeed, this combination never fails to attract attention and has earned the group several distinctions among which a Mimi Award (Montreal International Music Initiative) in March 2003 – rewarding artists with the most versatile appeal toward music lovers regardless of race, gender, age group and cultural background. Before that, Liva won the Relève Black Hard contest in 2001. Many live shows were performed by Liva in the province of Quebec. In the past, the band played in their hometown Sherbrooke for example, supporting Voivod in 2000 and Gorguts in September 2001. Liva also appeared at the Extreme Weekend Festival in Montreal (June 2002), featuring bands representing the future of Heavy Metal music in Quebec. In September 2003, they were on stage in Montreal as the added attraction for the one and only Canadian appearance of Nightwish. In 2004, Liva shared a stage with Amorphis and in 2005 the band supported Therion. Moreover, the French CBC has broadcast a live performance of Liva on both its FM and Internet Bande à Part programming (www.bandeapart.fm). During this live show, Liva was accompanied by 13 classical musicians. The band's first EP has been available in record stores since 2001 and right from the start, some of its songs appeared in many radio stations' top 10 charts, including the song "Dies Irae" that made it to number 1 on CFAK and on Bande à Part on the Galaxie channel. In 2002, the band independently produced their latest album "Requiem" and had it distributed throughout Canada by Outside Music. A live orchestrated version of the song "Tuba Mirum", which is also featured as a special multimedia video clip on the album "Requiem", will appear on the limited edition sampler DVD that will be presented at Montreal's Spectrum on the 24th of March 2006 in order to celebrate Bande à Part's fifth birthday. In other news, the public broadcasting channel Vox asked Pier Carlo to be part of their program "Vox Estrie" in October 2005 and, in November of the same year, Catherine Elvira finished first of her category (Master's degree) at the N.A.T.S. (National Association of Teachers of Singing) contest and second in the overall categories (Baccalauréat, Master's degree and Doctorate). Having been in contact with Hardebaran since the autumn of 2004, Liva is now ready to distribute "Requiem" outside of Canada.
