EPHEL DUATH Ephel Duath started out as a duo (with Giuliano Mogicato) in 1998, thanks to the determination of the then 18 years old Davide Tiso to try his hand in the hermetic musical scene that is Black Metal. The first and only demo ("Opera") was released in 1998. It bore the distinctive traits of the project: it is firmly rooted in influences taken from the Scandinavian Black Metal scene (Emperor) yet bold solutions, dissonant matches and a strong will to propose something new abound. The demo sold 2000 copies and also brought Ephel Duath a record deal with the young Italian label Code666 (which today produces Aborym, Aghora, Konkhra, Atrox, Void Of Silence, and many more) that, before all others, sensed the great potential of Ephel Duath, directing them towards the Fear Studios to record their debut album. In the meantime Code666 decided to put the tracks of Opera online, to make the music accessible and to prepare for the introduction of the new full-length album. A clever move indeed as feedback was enormous: the mp3.com site put Ephel Duath on the top 10 Black Metal download charts and for over 4 consecutive months the band stayed number one owing to the 35.000 certified downloads. When "Phormula" finally hit the stores in the summer of 2000, the feedback of the international press was huge… The record, compared to the demo, was an enormous step ahead due to its larger musical spectrum, higher production quality and further improvement of the duo's technical ability, which on this album touched levels hardly ever reached before by similar bands... At the crucial moment, Giuliano decided to quit music, leaving Davide by himself but new energy was found thanks to the management contract with Code7 (a branch of Code 666), which soon brought on the first important result: the prestigious British label Earache (Napalm Death, Carcass, Entombed, Morbid Angel…) offered Davide an important long-term agreement via their new sub-label Elitist, whose A&R manager Lee Barrett, is none other than the founder of Candlelight, with which at the beginning of the nineties he discovered and launched some of the foremost Metal bands (Emperor and Opeth being the most noteworthy). In accordance with Code666, Earache/Elitist, reprinted "Phormula" with the addition of bonus tracks, giving birth in 2002 to "Rephormula", that enabled Davide to assemble the new line-up and to compose the new album from scratch. The new line-up was quite bizarre, for Davide wanted to gather musicians with a new and unconditioned approach. Davide Piovesan was called at the drums; he's a 47-year-old percussion instrument and polyrhythmic teacher with a Jazz-Blues background. The next recruit was a highly prepared bass player of Prog-Fusion extraction, Fabio Fecchio. Davide Tolomei, who loves to emulate Jeff Buckley in his free time, became the melodic voice of the group… The last one to be selected was frontman Lucio Lorusso, a real stage animal with a Hardcore-Noise Apocalyptic background. "The Painter's Palette" is the result of 3 months in the recording studio with faithful producer Paso. The album marks a turning point as the 9 tracks on it may probably be defined as a whole new genre of music. Conceptually inspired from the connection between sounds and colors, "The Painter's Palette" is published as a strict artwork in black and white, to portray the intention of Ephel Duath to give color through sounds or, if you prefer, to play the sound of colors. The mp3 previews released set a new precedent (reaching once again 20.000 downloads of the single "The Passage"). In February 2003 the first live performance of the new songs at the Vidia of Cesena (with Lacuna Coil) was memorable owing to a great response from the audience.
